AMD has announced the introduction and immediate availability of the ATI Radeon HD 3800 Series of graphics processing units (GPU) which deliver Microsoft’s DirectX 10.1 support, 55nm process technology and tri and quad multi-GPU support with ATI CrossFireX.
The ATI Radeon HD 3800 series will be introduced in two variants; the ATI Radeon HD 3850 with 256MB of GDDR3 memory andthe ATI Radeon HD 3870 with 512MB GDDR4 memory. This new series of graphics products also represent the first step in the launch of AMD’s upcoming enthusiast platform codenamed “Spider.”
In addition to 55nm, AMD has also added its patented ATI PowerPlay technology to the ATI Radeon HD 3800 series to provide increased control over the graphics processor in multiple power states. With PowerPlay technology users can benefit from dynamic adjustment of clocks and voltages depending on their usage scenario, which allows for a cool and quiet user experience.
Read on for more info and launched cards.
With the launch of the ATI Radeon HD 3850 and ATI Radeon HD 3870, AMD has answered the call of HD video enthusiasts with top-to-bottom support for the 2Unified Video Decoder (UVD). The addition of UVD ensures exceptional platform efficiency and image quality in HD-DVD and Blu-rayTM decoding for both H.264 and VC-1 specifications. Enhanced HDMI functionality also continues on this series of products with integrated HDCP and audio for HDMI video.
The ATI Radeon HD 3800 series launches with broad availability and eco-system support from AMD’s Add-in-Board (AIB) and Systems Integrators (SI) partners. AIB partners building boards based on the ATI Radeon HD 3800 series include Asus, Club 3D, Diamond Multimedia, Gigabyte, HIS, Info-Tek, MSI, Palit, Sapphire, Tul and Visiontek. Systems integrators launching ATI Radeon HD 3800 series include ABS, Alienware, AMAX, Canada Computers, CyberPower, Extreme PC Corporation, Falcon-Northwest, iBUYPOWER, Maingear, Systemax, Ultra Gaming and Velocity Micro.
Here are some of the launched cards that should be hitting the market soon.
Asus EAH3800 TOP
Asus claims that users will enjoy 8% and 4% improvement in gaming
experiences respectively with the EAH3850 TOP/G/HTDI/256M and EAH3870
TOP/G/HTDI/512M. Along with the standard versions EAH3870/G/HTDI/512M
and EAH3850/G/HTDI/256M, all the ASUS EAH3800 Series models will be
upgraded soon to a second version that will come incorporated with the
newest thermal solution – the Glaciator Fansink. the Glaciator Fansink will keep the GPU temperature
20ºC cooler than reference designed boards.
 Asus Glaciator
With the EAH3850 TOP/G/HTDI/256M, gamers can expect core and memory clock performance boosts from 668MHz
up to 730MHz and from 828MHz up to 950MHz respectively. While with the
EAH3870 TOP/G/HTDI/512M, the core and memory clock performance boosts
are from 775MHz up to 850MHz and from 1125MHz up to 1140MHz.. The ASUS EAH3800 Series also comes with the exclusive
ASUS GamerOSD that unleashes the true power of ASUS’ VGA cards. This
feature is able to deliver GPU overclocking from onscreen displays
during gameplay – allowing users real-time performance upgrades when
they require it. Additionally, it also provides users with the option
to record live gaming action or live broadcasting over the Internet
with ease. On top of all this, the
ASUS EAH3800 Series will also come bundled with the hottest DX10 game, Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts.

Sapphire
Sapphire has not been left out as well with the launching of their own Radeon 3800 cards. The SAPPHIRE HD 3870 has 512MB of high performance GDDR4 memory, clocked at 1125MHz (2.25GHz effective) and the GPU core is clocked at 775MHz. A two slot fan cooler is used, evacuating outside the case through the slotted rear bracket. This is expected to provide enthusiasts with efficient cooling even when pushing the card to its limits. The SAPPHIRE HD 3850 has 256MB of GDDR3 memory, running at 830MHz (1.66GHz effective) and has a core clock speed of 670MHz. This model uses a single slot cooler.
Both models feature the new CrossFireX technology, with two high speed connectors on each card allowing 2, 3 or even 4 graphics cards to be daisy-chained together for enhanced performance when installed in a CrossFireX mainboard. As each card has two dual-link DVI connectors, this allows up to eight monitors to be used at the same time, or - with CrossFire enabled - two GPU’s (and up to four with future driver releases) to provide a more powerful rendering solution.
