[via Sun2Surf and Hackinthebox.org]
Via blogs and chatrooms, a group of university students honed their
skills on how to make money from the Internet - the crooked way.
Tapping into a network of partners with knowledge on online hacking,
the students learnt how to cheat and cyber-rob, all from the confines
of their homes and internet cafes.
Their victims were those who were unfamiliar with the security rules of internet banking.
They made tens of thousand of ringgit luring unsuspecting online
banking users to part with their personal and protected data such as
usernames and passwords.
All these came to an end when police arrested 13 people, including
at least four university students, in Kelantan, Selangor and Kuala
Lumpur over the last two weeks for the internet banking scam
It is learnt that among those detained was a woman and a few banking staff.
Among the students, who are from private and public universities
here, some are said to be children of high ranking goverment servants.

Google Purchases YouTube! |

The rumours were real! Google has purchased YouTube for $1.65 billion in a stock-for-stock transaction. Basically, the shareholders of YouTube get Google's (overvalued) stock in exchange for their shareholding. All employees of YouTube, including its founders, Chad Hurley and Steve Chen are retained.
How will this affect Google Video? Can Google make YouTube turn a profit? Can Google stave off copyright charges against YouTube? If YouTube is to be an independent unit of Google, why couldn't it just have struck an advertisement deal? Will Google change its name to 'GooTube'? :P It all remains to be seen.
Read on for Google's press release on the acquisition. The BBC has an article here. The image above is YouTube's headquarters in San Mateo, taken from Wikipedia.
UPDATE | The founders of YouTube, Steve Chen and Chad Hurley have posted a video about the sale on their own site here.

Monday, 09 October 2006 04:16 PM |
Yahoo! Inc. today announced the
launch of what is expected to be the world's largest time capsule in history.
Starting today, Yahoo! is encouraging people from around the world to
contribute personal photos, stories, thoughts, ideas, poems, home movies and
art to this first-ever electronic anthropology project designed to document life
in 2006. In celebration of the project, Yahoo! will illuminate one of the most well-preserved
sites from ancient times by projecting selected time capsule submissions onto
The Pyramid of the Sun in Teotihuacan,
Mexico from
October 25-27, 2006, as well as beaming the material into space. Submissions for the Yahoo! Time Capsule can
be made at timecapsule.yahoo.com or
by searching for "Yahoo! Time Capsule" on Yahoo!.
"One in two Internet users around the world use Yahoo!, and
we are proud to document this moment in history with them in celebration of the
global online community," said Jerry Yang,
co-founder and Chief Yahoo!. "Wherever people use Yahoo! - from Mexico, Germany
or China to the U.S. -
we want them to represent their culture and show us what's important to them by
participating in this historic Internet time capsule event. It will be
fascinating to see what people submit as their part of this 2006 snapshot,
which will be shared with generations to come."

Is Google Purchasing YouTube? |
|
by Ryan Ratilal
|

The BBC today reports that Google are in talks to buy YouTube for $1.6 billion. If any company has the cash at hand and certainly, the clout to purchase YouTube and let it remain popular, it would surely be Google. This news comes just days after Mark Cuban, the billionaire dot-com investor suggested that "only a moron would buy YouTube".
In his criticisms of YouTube, Cuban referred to pending copyright litigation against YouTube. YouTube serves up to 100 million videos a day currently, and is a huge target for the copyright cartel. Apart from the obvious cases, many homemade videos on Youtube do contain music or clips from copyrighted songs, and this may arguably be infringement of copyright.
At least one recording company has expressed strong indication that it may resort to using a stick (read: sue) to halt YouTube. Universal Music has indicated that it would reveal its plans against companies like YouTube 'shortly'. On YouTube's part, it does have a copyright policy in place, which it argues, is in line with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act in force in the United States.
What happens next? Google has experience with being sued for coypright infringement, most recently, with its Google News service in Belgium and its on-going Google Books project. If Google does go ahead and purchase YouTube, it would certainly be the 'deep pockets' any recording company would be looking for when it sues YouTube.

Fujitsu, maker of the popular Lifebook series of notebooks have estimated that the Sony initiated battery recall program will invove close to 287,000 of their notebooks sold in and outside Japan. The models sold in Malaysia include the LIFEBOOK P1510, P1510D, P7120, P7120D, S7020, S7020D, S7025, S7025D, C1320 and C1320D. No immediate details are available on where replacement batteries might be available in Malaysia just yet.
Rumours are abound that the exploding battery syndrome could also involve other lithium ion powered gadgets that utilize Sony batteries, but Sony has since denied that the problem exist. So until we see a handphone burning a hole in the pocket, literally, we shall take their word for it.

Cisco Systems Evolves Image and Network Innovation for the Future |

Cisco Systems has launched a new branding
campaign that is poised to evolve network innovation and keep in touch with
global trends. In lieu of the company's current marketing direction, a new
corporate logo was unveiled for the first time to members of the press, and
Lowyat.NET has first witness.
Cisco claims it is poised to take advantage
of a market inflection whereby network infrastructures are changing the way
market sectors operate and are identified. The latest online trends such as blogs,
wikis, social networks and collaborative applications are part of a network
which empowers the end user, and Cisco is repositioning itself to deliver
networking solutions required to enable this human network.
"We are all end users who use network
technology when we work, on the road, when we communicate with associates, when
we collaborate, or when we are at home. In the past, technology innovation was
driven by the enterprise. Now, it is the end users who are empowered," said
Kumaran Singaram, Managing Director for Cisco Systems Malaysia.

Hewlett-Packard will axe 200 jobs and move
the work to Kuala Lumpur as part of a cost-cutting exercise at its
computer support division.
Fifty workers left HP's managed
services business - which provides telephone computer support for big
companies like Norwich Union and Pacific Brands - last week, and a
further 80 staff will be laid off in November. Seventy contractors will
be kept on until March.
The cuts affect offices in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide.
"We are sending entry-level support to Kuala Lumpur," said a
spokesman. "Nothing will change as far as customers are concerned,
except a small change in who answers the phone.
"It's been on the cards for a while, and employees have been kept in the loop."
The spokesman said Kuala Lumpur was an HP "Global Centre of Excellence" for computer support.

TMNET is beta-testing its new IPTV services in selected apartment buildings in the Klang Valley. The 560 participants would receive an 8Mbps connection to their homes for the purposes of the beta-testing. For more information, please visit jeffooi.com and follow the instructions and links.
IPTV is basically a digital television service provided via a broadband connection. TMNet has been strongly rumoured previously to begin offering this service even before the launch of MITV, and it would appear that this beta-testing period is a strong indication that a full launch is on the horizon now.
