Wednesday, 12 September 2007 11:02 AM

ImageApple Inc. has reported that it has sold its one millionth iPhone on Sunday, just 74 days after its introduction ahead of its expectations to hit the mark by the end of September.

Interestingly this came less than a week after CEO Steve Jobs apologized for cutting the price of the iPhone. Those who bought the phones early were annoyed at Apple for announcing a price cut barely 3 months from the phone's launch. They will however receive credits amounting to USD$100 from Apple.

The 8GB iPhone which originally sold for USD$599 was reduced to USD$399 while the 4GB version which sold for USD$499 will be phased our completely. So Apple now that you've reach your sales target, when will you be launching it over here?

AMD LAUNCHES QUAD-CORE OPTERON (Barcelona)
by Terence
Tuesday, 11 September 2007 08:58 AM

ImageAMD (Advanced Micro Devices) today introduced the Quad-Core AMD Opteron™ processor, the world’s most advanced x86 processor ever designed and manufactured and the first native x86 quad-core microprocessor. Designed from inception for the most demanding datacenters, Quad-Core AMD Opteron processor-based servers from global OEMs and system builders can deliver breakthrough capabilities to customers in a time of dramatically escalating performance-per-watt emphasis.

Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors with AMD’s revolutionary Direct Connect Architecture introduce innovations that go beyond four x86 processing cores on a single die of silicon. Critical considerations for today’s most challenging business requirements inspired Quad-Core AMD Opteron processor innovations: energy efficiency with a 50 percent increase in integer and floating-point performance, enhanced virtualization performance, and investment protection via a customer-centric approach enabling non-disruptive transitions from dual- to quad-core within the same power and thermal envelopes to help keep infrastructure costs down.

“Today marks one of the great milestones in microprocessor achievement as AMD again raises expectations for industry-standard computing,” said Hector Ruiz, chairman and chief executive officer, AMD. “We’ve worked closely with our customers and partners to design a new generation of processing solutions embodied by today’s Quad-Core AMD Opteron processor – a four-way winner in performance, energy efficiency, virtualization and investment protection. Early customer response has been extremely positive.”

Intel's Quad Core for High end Servers
by Nigel Yap
Sunday, 09 September 2007 06:49 PM

Image Intel Corporation has unveiled the industry’s first quad-core processors specifically designed for multi-processor (MP) servers running applications requiring uncompromised performance, reliability and scalability. The six new Quad-Core Xeon 7300 series processors can deliver more than twice the performance and more than three times the performance per watt over the company’s previous generation dual-core products. They complete the company’s speedy transition to its innovative and energy-efficient Core™ microarchitecture. This platform’s energy-efficient performance, coupled with enhanced virtualization capabilities, will enable customers to significantly lower their total cost of ownership.

The energy-efficient 7300 series includes frequencies up to 2.93GHz at 130 watts, several 80-watt processors and a 50-watt version optimized for four socket blades and high-density rack form factors with a frequency of 1.86GHz. The Intel 7300 chipset with Data Traffic Optimizations provides a balanced platform design with several new technologies that enhance data movement between the processors, memory and I/O connections.

By delivering the benefits of the Intel Core Microarchitecture with quad-core performance and Intel Virtualization Technology to these high-end servers, Intel is providing customers with an ideal platform for virtualization and server consolidation. In addition to twice the cores, the 7300 series and Intel 7300 chipset offer up to four times the memory capacity of Intel’s previous MP platforms, enabling very large consolidation ratios that can reduce space, power and operation costs.
