With the latest trend of wireless broadband being heavily promoted by the local telcos, HSDPA and 3G modems are being flooding the market mainly from China and Taiwan. Today however we got a chance to test drive products from VigSys a local brand.
We will take a look at the VigSys USB Data Gateway the VM10 and the VR20 Wireless Data Gateway.
The VR10 is basically a HSDPA/3G USB modem, similar to those that we have seen on the market so far. The physical size of the modem is not too big and doesn't weigh much heavier as compared to other brands.
The VR10 is capable of supporting data speeds of up to 7.2Mbps and uploads of up to 384Kbps using HSDPA. It comes bundled with a setup CD, setup guide and a usb cable.
Setup is quite straight forward, all we need to do is place the SIM card in the SIM card holder underneath the modem, insert the provided installation CD and install the drivers and software provided, plug the modem in and we are good to go.
The provided software has a sleek and functional UI, not to mention dead easy to use. Once it detects the modem, it will prompt you for your SIM card pin. Type the PIN and the modem will start looking for the mobile network just like a mobile phone.
Clicking on the Connect buttons connects you almost instantly to the Internet. We don't even need to setup things like the APN user id and password or etc. which is great!
We did a small speed test on speedtest.net and this is what we got:
I would say the results are average and normal as our office location is in on the 9th floor of a building in KL city itself.
