Page 1 of 5 Tablet PC’s aren’t quite a new concept in computing, having been around for around ten or so odd years. But the earliest Tablet PCs were expensive and (relatively) underpowered (take for instance, the first commercially available Tablet: the MS-DOS running GRiDPAD – it weighed around 2.5kgs and had only a 386 processor – only god knows how much it was selling for at the time); and only lately has the Tablet PC matured into something that is relatively practical for mainstream use, both in terms of cost, size and performance.
The TX1613au represents HP's latest foray into the world of the mainstream Tablet PC, having started out with the innovative TX1000, which successfully blended performance and manageable size with a price that was not overly exclusive. The TX1613au continues this trend, being the least expensive HP tablet on sale in Malaysia today (and in fact, one of the cheapest fully featured tablet PCs as of right now).
Helping a friend buy his first laptop with a budget of around RM3000, he was soon drawn to the mix of style and functionality that the TX1316au provided. A whole night of research later (just to make sure we weren’t buying a lemon), we decided that it was a sound buy and marched up into Low Yat Plaza to get it.
With a 1.8GHz Athlon 2x processor (comparable to a low end Core Duo), up to 2GB of RAM, a built in optical drive and even a low end (but still slightly game-able) video card, let’s see if HP's foray into the low end Tablet PC market is worth spending time and money on.
