First look at Asus P5E3 Deluxe

Hi ho everyone. In anticipation of Intel's new X38 chipset, we were surprised with a special package from Asus. What we got, ahead of time was Asus' new X38 board the Asus P5E3 Deluxe. We have no benchmark scores per se but we have taken a good look at the unit itself. Read on for more.

Image

The board is pretty well designed and solidly built. It'll fit nicely into most ATX cases though in our case most of our casings were rather big already.  They layout of the board was well designed as well, allowing for easy access to most of the port when installed into a normal ATX casing.  I liked that Asus has angled the SATA and PATA ports outwards which would allow for easy access and housekeeping while doing the overall installation of the board.

The first thing you'll notice about the board is its cooling mechanism. The entire cooling sink takes up almost half of the board and surrounds the chip socket for reasons of cooling the chipset and voltage regulators. Considering that the cooling solution of the board was massively huge, you'd think that it'll be a bit of trouble trying to fit in anything other than a stock fan. However, my preliminary checks on the board found that it should be able to take most, CPU coolers on the market. And speaking of cooling, the P5E Deluxe comes with a whopping six pin headers for casing fans, all which can be controlled from the Asus BIOS. This is pretty great as there are some of you out there that can get a bit fan crazy for your rig (there never is such a thing as too much fans though).

The board comes with three physical PCI-E x16 connectors, two PCI-E x1 connectors, and two PCI 2.2 connectors. We found however, that it'll be quite a tight fit to install a graphics card into the slots, due to the proximity of the memory slots to the PCI slots.   This is when you're fitting in a full size card however.

The rear panels come with dual RJ-45 LAN ports with activity indicator lights, six USB ports, and optical/coaxial S/PDIF out ports as well as your standard PS2 ports. I understand that there are supposed to be two WiFi antenna connectors behind as well though our unit did not come wireless ready. So that's pretty much it for our first look at Asus' P5E3 Deluxe X38 chipset board. We'llbe returning with a full review of the board pretty soon with benchmark scores as well.
