INTRODUCTION
Notebooks have become more a
necessity then just a luxury in recent years, thanks to its mobility and the
recent rise of wireless hotspots. With the development of computing technology,
the performance and usability of notebooks have improved much since the days of
the very first “notebook”, the NEC UltraLight of 1989, and are now truly the
mobile computers that the creators of these first notebooks had envisioned them
to be.
Earlier this year, I found myself
looking for a replacement for my 4++ year old Fujitsu C2220. After shopping
around for a while, I narrowed down my choices to the HP Pavilion DV6140EA and
a few HP Compaq notebooks. Then, I stumbled by accident one fine day onto the
Dell website, customized an XPS M1210, just for the fun of it, and found out
that it was somehow within my budget.
For the uninitiated, the Dell’s XPS
line of computers and laptops (XPS standing for Xtreme Performance System)
offer the cream of the crop in the Dell product line. Here in Malaysia,
however, the only XPS model available is the XPS M1210 laptop, a 12 inch
(semi-)ultraportable. Like every other Dell product, it was also immensely
customizable, and before long, I had my dream (though budget limited laptop)
all customized and ready to order.
A few weeks of intense negotiations
later, as the fully customized M1210 was around a thousand ringgit off the
initial budget (after adding in RAM and the CompleteCover 3-Year warranty
package, more on that later), I placed the order, and got my brand new XPS M1210
in about 4 days.
