BenQ FP241WZ Review

BenQ has been surprising me with some of their monitors lately. You'd be expecting names like Dell, Samsung and Phillips to be making waves when it comes to PC monitors but well after going through the BenQ FP241WZ 24", I think BenQ has a pretty good chance of making it big in this segment of the computer peripherals market. 24" for a monitor can be considered huge, which was the first thing that sprung to my mind when I first received the BenQ FP241WZ. That wasn't the only thing that caught my attention though. When I read through its specifications another feature did, HDTV support with its HDTV port. It seems BenQ isn't skimping when it comes to offerings on its monitors. And at around RM2700+, I was thinking that the BenQ FP241WZ was really offering good value.

Read on for more of this review

Of course, when most of us think of HDTV we're usually thinking of something bigger than 24". Then again, HDTVs come in all sizes. At 24" the BenQ is suitable for office and home use though if you're willing it could also work in a living room, though 24" might just be a little to small for a living room.

What you get when you open the box is the monitor, cables (digital and analog), AC adapter, desk mount, manual disc and quick guide.

The FP241WZ comes with a variety of inputs most notable of all is the HDMI input and the USB ports.

We commend BenQ for going all out on implementing HD into their line of monitors and like the FP94W we really love it.

As for the USB ports, the monitor can act as a USB HUB once you connect the USB cable to the PC.

Looks wise, the BenQ FP241WZ seems rather plain when compared to FP94W we reviewed earlier on. Basically its plain, black and big. But seriously, what it lacks in terms of the looks department, it does pretty well in the functionality department.

The FP241WZ native resolution is 1920 x 1200 which made this monitor perfect for design jobs like photo editing and such. It's wide area allowed me to open and arrange multiple windows without having to constantly switch from one window to another. One thing you ought to note is that the FP241WZ is actually similar to BenQ's FP241W, the difference in the Z is that the Z denotes the new technologies that have been implemented into the monitor. One of the new technologies that have been implemented in is BFI which stands for Black Frame Inserting technology. This technology works by interleaving completely black frames with the image. This allows your visual system to ‘forget' the previous video frame without it blurring into the next one. One effect this has though is that it introduces some flicker into the image, it goes mostly unnoticeable. The monitor has three levels of BFI and you can also turn it off as occasionally you will notice the flicker and it can be quite irritating.

As its response time is 6ms, most gamers will enjoy the use of the FP241WZ. It also has a brilliant depth of shade and the PerfectMotion technology built in actually helped to remove whatever blurs or ghosting that usually happen during fast moving games.

 Image

Gaming is not the only strong point that the monitor has as those of you who love movies will enjoy watching them on the FP241WZ. The colour palette of the monitor is nothing short of great and also has a vibrancy and brightness that I would usually associate with Samsung monitors. Should the default settings not suit you still, the host of fine tuning options that the monitor comes with ought to suit you as well. You can even alter the aspect ration of the monitor which would cut out unnecessary stretching when viewing HD content. Also as the monitor has a host of input, there is a PIP (Picture in picture) option should you want see more than one screen. Be mindful thought that column two has only Composite and S-Video and column 1 holds the majority of the best Inputs like HDMI. So if you want to PIP DVI-D with HDMI, that would be impossible.

One final feature I'd like to mention is that  the FP241WZ can be turned 90 degrees to a vertical standing angle. By adjusting the height of the monitor stand and pulling it up. The monitor can be then turned to an upright position so you can view vertical pictures in their full glory.

 Image

The BenQ FP241WZ is a great 24" monitor. With its variety of inputs and its overall quality of images displayed, there is nothing that I can really find any complaint about. As for the price, at RM2,700+ I feel, that it's still worth the money considering you're also getting a monitor that has HD support.

After reading many good reviews about FP241W Z I decided to go for it. It is fantsatic. I am a designer and the brightness and clarity is just perfect. I was using a 20.1" Dell and side by side the difference is amazing. Benq is sharper colours are more realistic and if you calibrate it properly it gets even beter. I have also tried it with xbox360 using vga, games look bright shiny the detail is amazing (even after turning the brightness down to 50) 1:1 works perfecly no black bars. Highly recommended definetly 5 stars.
