Recently, LG announced that it has developed a 5.3-inch Full HD LCD panel for smartphones with what LG claims as the world’s narrowest bezel at 0.7mm.
Byeong-koo Kim, Vice President and Head of IT/Mobile Development Group at LG display, said that the reasoning behind creating such a thin bezel was to meet the demands for a narrow bezel as smartphone screens become larger. He went on to say that users are able to fully enjoy the screen real estate without sacrificing grip and design.
In order to manufacture the thin bezel, LG Display used what it calls its “Neo Edge” module processing technology. The Neo Edge technology is essentially an adhesive that attaches to and completely seals the area around the panel’s circuit board and backlight unit. Due to the absence of a plastic guide panel, the Neo Edge technology is able to keep bezel width at a bare minimum while being waterproof and dust proof.
While the horizontal bezels have received a slimming treatment, its vertical bezels remain at a conventional size but this is understandable as a certain degree of space has to be maintained for the front-facing camera.
Although demo units of the Full HD LCD panels were shown, it would seem that LG is planning to implement their screens in smartphones rather soon as mass production of the panel is to start in November. LG stated that it is prioritising China since the demand for large screen smartphones are strong over there.
It will definitely be interesting to see how the panels from LG will pan out if the panel does indeed achieve commercial success.
