Apart from the dual-screen Asus Taichi Ultrabook, Asus Malaysia will also be releasing another Windows 8-based product called Asus VivoTab Smart into our market this week. Powered by a 1.8GHz Intel Atom Z2760 dual-core processor (codenamed “Clover Trail”), don’t make any mistake – the VivoTab Smart is still a full-fledged Windows 8 tablet.

Equipped with a 10.1-inch IPS display with a resolution of 1366 x 768 and 175-degree viewing angle, the VivoTab Smart also comes with 2GB of RAM and internal storage space of 64GB. Weights at 580g and with a thickness of 9.7mm, the tablet is also equipped with an 8-megapixels main camera that is coupled together with f2.2 5-element lens as well as a 2-megapixels front-facing camera and built-in stereo speakers that are enhanced by Asus SonicMaster audio technology.

Its internal 6760mAh battery is said to be able to provide up to 9.5 hours of battery life for standard Wi-Fi model and 8.5 hours for LTE model. The tablet also comes with Near Field Communication (NFC) capability and while it doesn’t support keyboard dock as per certain Asus tablet’s out there, users can opt for a TranSleeve Keyboard instead which acts as an all-in-one cover, keyboard with standard touchpad, and stand for the tablet.

As mentioned earlier, the Asus VivoTab Smart is not designed to be used with a keyboard dock or any type of dock since there’s no docking port on its underside to begin with.

[L - R]: I/O ports on the Asus VivoTab Smart: Micro HDMI, Micro SIM and Micro USB on the tablet’s left side; Volume rocker and combo 3.5mm audio port on the right side; power button on the top side.

For LTE model, there will be a SIM card slot right after these Micro HDMI port and Micro SD slot.

The tablet’s rear area looks pretty clean and only occupied by the tablet’s 8-megapixels camera as well as its LED flash together with tons of logos and regulatory information.

Without any docking port, how does the optional TranSleeve Keyboard connect to the tablet? Easy – it communicates via Bluetooth while the sleeve magnetically snaps to the tablet’s bottom.

Asus VivoTab Smart head-to-head comparison with Microsoft Surface RT and Samsung ATIV Tab. Frankly speaking, this is a rather unfair comparison though since Surface and ATIV Tab are Windows RT products unlike VivoTab Smart which is a full-fledged Windows 8 tablet. A better comparison would be the Intel Atom-powered Samsung ATIV Smart PC.

The Asus VivoTab Smart Wi-Fi model will be made available in Malaysia starting from this week onwards with a price tag of RM 1,799 while the LTE version will be released in February for RM 2,099. For further information, visit www.asus.com.
